In an incredible win for gender equality, six of the 12 babies born last night at Advocate Hospital were reported to be female. WOW!
Over the last several decades, surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics have shown that in fields such as engineering, computer science, politics, finance, business, physics, medical research, chemistry and so on continue to be dominated by men. But this is one cohort where males won’t dominate! Advocate Hospital’s OB-GYN director, Dr. Marcella Alvarez may have said that last night’s veritable civil rights parade of babies was “based on the normative averages of biology.” But we aren’t going to let that get us down!
Interestingly enough, there are some areas where adult females are overrepresented compared to their male counterparts. One survey found that adult women are 87 percent more likely to have nasty things yelled at them by strange men on the street.
Take that, the Patriarchy.
